Partners: Peter Symonds College and City of Portsmouth College
Implementation:
This year, the group turned their focus to the 16–19 Bursary process. Through research conducted across colleges and sixth forms throughout the UK, they identified widespread inconsistency in each step of the process. In response, students from two colleges came together to create the Unlocking Support: 16–19 Bursary Guide – practical, student-shaped resource designed to make the bursary system more accessible, consistent, and easier for all learners to understand.

Maddison’s Insights

I was motivated to get involved with the Through our Eyes Project because I saw it as a chance to make a real difference. Being given this opportunity made me feel empowered to use my voice, represent others, and be an advocate for positive change. I wanted to help create a space where people feel heard and supported, and this programme gave me the platform to do that.
Being part of this programme has helped me develop a range of valuable skills. I’ve grown in confidence, especially when it comes to public speaking in a formal setting and communicating my ideas clearly. I’ve also improved my leadership and teamwork abilities by collaborating with others and taking initiative in group settings. Most importantly, I’ve learnt how to advocate effectively and listen to different perspectives, which has strengthened my ability to make a positive impact. This experience has helped me step outside my comfort zone, think more critically, and believe in the difference I can make in my community.
Inclusivity has been a key goal of mine throughout this project; I wanted to ensure that no one feels excluded, and this experience has shown that when everyone’s voice is heard, real change becomes possible. It’s empowered us to believe that we can drive the changes needed not just for ourselves, but for future students as well.
I benefitted most from our video and camera meeting day, where we shared our stories and connected with others who reinforced that what we’re doing is important and meaningful. It was a powerful experience that allowed me to grow personally, especially since it’s not something I would typically have the opportunity to do. However, the achievement I’m most proud of is being given the chance to attend and run a workshop at the NAMSS Birmingham Conference. Speaking directly to those in positions of power who took the time to truly listen to our message and our hopes for change was incredibly empowering and meaningful.
There were moments when I doubted my ability to contribute or make a difference. But this programme gave me the space to grow, be heard, and find my confidence. I started with doubts, but I’ve come away stronger, more inspired, and more determined than ever to create change.
